The Vision Behind Montero Performance Racing
Montero Performance Racing was founded with one clear goal: to build a competitive, professional pathway into grassroots wheel-to-wheel racing. This program is being developed from the ground up with structure, preparation, and long-term growth in mind — not shortcuts.
Built under the Montero Motorsports brand, MPR represents the start of a serious racing effort focused on performance, development, and credibility at the club level.
Joaquin Lopez – Mechanic, Montero Performance Racing
I became part of Montero Performance Racing (MPR) during the early stages of the team’s development. As someone from Westerville, Ohio, I had the opportunity to see the idea behind the team begin to take shape and grow into something much more serious than just a simple project.
My interest in cars started through working on regular street vehicles. Spending time around cars and learning how they work gave me hands-on experience with basic mechanical systems and the problem-solving that comes with repairing and maintaining vehicles. While those experiences were not directly related to race cars, they gave me a foundation for understanding how machines function and how important attention to detail can be when working on them.
When Shawn Montero began building Montero Performance Racing, he explained the vision behind the team and what he wanted to create. His goal was not just to form a racing team, but to build a structured program that could help support drivers and give them a real opportunity to develop in motorsports.
After hearing about the idea and seeing the seriousness behind the project, I decided I wanted to be part of helping the team grow from the beginning.
That decision led me to join Montero Performance Racing as a mechanic.
Working as a mechanic within a racing team means being responsible for keeping the car prepared, maintained, and ready for competition. Even small details can make a major difference in performance and reliability, which makes mechanical work one of the most important parts of the entire operation.
While race cars operate differently from standard vehicles in many ways, the core mechanical principles are still the same. Learning how those systems work in a racing environment has been an opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain new experience.
One of the things that stood out to me about MPR is that the team is being built around a mindset of growth and teamwork. The goal isn’t just to compete, but to build an environment where drivers and crew members can develop their skills and learn more about the sport together.
Being part of a team from the beginning also means helping shape what that team will eventually become. Every crew member contributes to the culture, the work ethic, and the standards that define the organization as it grows.
For me, being involved as a mechanic is an opportunity to continue learning about motorsports and improve my technical skills while supporting the drivers and the rest of the crew. Racing teams rely heavily on trust between drivers and mechanics, and that relationship plays a huge role in helping the car perform the way it should.
Montero Performance Racing is still in its early stages, but that is also what makes the experience unique. Being involved from the foundation of a team means seeing the growth happen step by step and contributing to the progress along the way.
As the team continues to expand and take on new challenges, I look forward to gaining more experience working with race cars and continuing to support the team however I can.
For me, being part of Montero Performance Racing is about learning, contributing to the team, and helping build something that has the potential to grow into a strong and respected program within grassroots motorsports.
